Joe Kirkman was a gentle man who meant so much to so many.
He was a beloved son, husband, loved and respected teacher, avid musician
and a true friend. He loved the Yankees, playing drums with his friends, WFU sports,
The Blues, Jazz, history, observing and respecting nature, reading everything and guiding young people.

Thoughts from fellow musicians:

"He was a solid drummer with a great jazzy, swing-type feel"

"Joe was a consummate 'feel' drummer and an extremely open and engaging person"

"I never got to have the "perfect" drummer in my own band"

After graduating from Wake Forest in 1973, Joe began his career at
Franklin Elementary School (where both he and his parents attended school).
As his students know, Mr. Kirkman had his classroom in a trailer,
an ordinary setting for extraordinary lessons.

Quotes from former students:

"I will never forget how he explained to us the importance of the fall of the Berlin Wall"

"Loved the days we'd skip math altogether and talk about current events"

"Other than my own father, no man had a greater impact on my life than Mr. Kirkman"

"I was fortunate to have the pleasure of teaching with Mr. Kirkman. I still can't call him Joe"

"I am a teacher because of Mr. Kirkman"

"He treated us like real people with important thoughts"

His last years were at Pilot Mountain Middle School.
He was extremely sad to resign due to his health in December of 2004.
He was informed of the scholarship in his name before he passed away.
He was genuinely humbled by the thought, as those who knew him could imagine.

We have established a continuing Endowment, The Joseph Roy Kirkman Teacher Scholarship,
in conjunction with Surry Community College in Dobson, NC. This scholarship
will provide funds toward the education of deserving students
pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Education.

The Joseph Kirkman Foundation, Inc.,
established in 2010, has as its purpose to award
scholarships for students attending other colleges or four
year universities. The amount is to be determined at a future date.
